What is mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary, confidential way of resolving a disagreement with the help of a neutral person, the mediator. Instead of a court or a judge deciding for you, the people involved talk the issues through, with support, and work out an agreement themselves.

It can be used for many kinds of disagreement: arrangements for children after a separation, money and property, family disagreements, and disputes between neighbours, colleagues or businesses. It is usually quicker, less stressful and far cheaper than going to court, and because you shape the outcome together, the arrangements you reach are more likely to work in practice.

What does a mediator actually do?

A mediator is neutral. They don't take sides or make decisions for you. They keep the conversation calm and structured, make sure you both get heard, and help you explore options until you find arrangements you can both live with. What you discuss stays private, unless someone, especially a child, may be at risk of harm.

How can Lexaura help?

We start with a free 15-minute call to understand what's happening and what you need. From there, we can mediate between you and the other person, online or in person, to help you reach practical arrangements you can both live with.

We can also help with the paperwork around a dispute or a life change: organising documents, preparing papers, will drafting, contract proofreading, passport applications and general administration, with interpretation and translation if you need it. If your matter needs a closer legal eye, we work with solicitors we can bring in or refer you to. That adds to the cost, so we'll always talk it through with you first. Many people go straight to a solicitor without considering mediation, which is often a quicker and more affordable first step.

Should we try mediation before going to court?

Usually, yes. Courts in England and Wales expect people to consider mediation or another way of settling a dispute before starting a claim, and a judge can take into account whether you tried. The government's guide to civil mediation (opens in a new tab) explains how it works and when it helps. If your situation involves a court application about children or finances, ask us on your free call and we'll explain the steps.

We can barely talk to each other. Can mediation still work?

Often, yes. Lots of people come to mediation because communication has broken down; that's what the structure is there for. If there are safety worries, or one of you wouldn't feel able to speak freely, mediation may not be right, and we'll tell you honestly and point you towards other support. If you're experiencing domestic abuse, the free 24-hour National Domestic Abuse Helpline is on 0808 2000 247. In an emergency, call 999.

How much will it cost?

Mediation is £80 per hour for the session (not per person), and your first 15-minute call is free. For other services, we'll agree a price with you before any work starts.

How do I pay, and what if I need to cancel?

Payment is by bank transfer; we'll send you the details when your session is confirmed. If you need to cancel or rearrange a session, please give us at least 48 hours' notice.

Is what we agree in mediation legally binding?

Not automatically. What you agree can be written up so you both have a clear record. If you want it to be legally binding, you'll usually need a solicitor to turn it into a formal agreement or court order. We're happy to explain how that works.

What happens on the free 15-minute call?

You tell us a little about what's going on and what you'd like help with. We'll explain which service fits, how it works and what it costs. You don't need to prepare anything, and there's no pressure to book.

Can you help in another language?

Yes. We can help you understand documents and take part in conversations. Shabnam speaks Farsi herself. For other languages, we can arrange interpretation or translation on request, at an extra cost. Tell us which language when you get in touch and we'll confirm the details.

Can you help with paperwork if I don't need mediation?

Yes. We help with wills, contract proofreading, passport applications, translation and general admin. We're not solicitors and don't give formal legal advice; if you need that, we'll suggest a regulated professional.
